Santa Monica Wedding - Carey and David

Santa Monica Beach Wedding

Wedding/Reception Venue: The Santa Monica Beach Club

Carey and David are a really great fun loving couple.  They seem like they're always up to something exciting and when you're around them you get really inspired to do and see interesting things.  Just following them on Facebook is a treat, these people know the best restaurants and destinations in LA and they're some of the most warm and inviting people you'll meet. From the moment we met them we knew we'd be a great match.

You might remember their Venice engagement session a little while back- we got the personalized intro to the love of food trucks, and we're better off for it.  Many a time since have we gone down to Abbot Kinney Blvd and staked out the food truck lines at night!

Since Carey wrote out a pretty epic description of her wedding, I'm going to let her do the talking. :)  Thanks for a wonderful day guys, shooting your wedding was a real treat for the both of us! -Ian and Tanya

A few words from Carey:

A few themes I wanted to have for my wedding, vintage but modern, elegant yet comfortable, and 100% about my husband and I. While difficult, melting those ideas together came out more successful than I ever could have thought. From the start, it was clear that we wanted to have our wedding in what we consider our “backyard” – it just so happens that living in Santa Monica, the backyard is the beach where we spend many days lounging at a private beach club…the same beach that I built sand castles at as a child, and I’m lucky enough to have my other half love it as much as I do….and we always feel so at home there. Luckily, that shone through the ceremony and reception as guests came up to us throughout the night and let us know that the wedding truly reflected us as a couple, a success in my book!

With a location set and a theme chosen – “vintage beach wedding” – picking the colors was the next phase that was an important aspect that would frame the evening. I wanted warm, welcoming colors that would blend well with the beach backdrop. I settled on a warm peach that was a bit brighter than I originally wanted, but ended up being a beautiful contrast to the fog that rolled in right as our ceremony began… the warmth shone through to help make everything feel inviting despite the unruly weather. The contrast of the groomsmen’s light suits with the bridemaid’s bright dresses was the perfect collage of colors. As for me, my vintage inspired dress was all ivory French lace over a café colored base with a scoop neck and a birdcage veil by Sara Gabriel topped off the look.

My now hubby and I had our hands in every detail of the planning, from designing our own invitations with the help of Urbanic Paper Boutique, to finding and applying vintage stamps, designing and printing our programs and menus, hand stamping our place cards, and tying the perfect knots (no bows allowed in this wedding!) on our favors.

In the months preceding the wedding, our families spent hours searching for milk glass at antique shops and online.  Eventually we scooped up about 60 pieces which were used as the centerpieces for our tables holding our flowers that included dahlias, billy balls and garden roses.  To finish off the vintage feeling, we added hemstitch napkins and milk glass votives to each table.

An important aspect of the ceremony and reception was to make everyone feel comfortable, so we provided sandals to our guests since our ceremony in the sand.  We’re a very go with the flow couple as evidences by our three, yes three ring bearers, who were building sandcastles during the ceremony, something we couldn’t have been happier about.  After a very personalized ceremony with traditional vows, our cocktail hour started with a steel drum band playing Bob Marley’s “One Love” in the background.

As an alternative to the popular photo booth, we decided to add a creative twist and made a photo WALL, yes wall.  We purchased old vintage frames for wedding photos of our parents and grandparents that would be placed on the wall with three larger frames which were cut out to allow our guests to peek their heads through to become part of the living photo wall.  We added our own props for good laughs and had a photographer stationed there to capture fond keepsakes for our guests.
