As photographers, Ian and I love it when couples take traditional wedding details, turn them on their heads, and make them their own. That’s just what Timo and Rachel did for their Inn of the Seventh Ray wedding, and it was so much fun to photograph.
In a twist on tradition, Rachel and Timo actually got dressed up in their wedding gear a few weeks before the wedding so they would have time for a nice, extended portrait session for their Inn of the Seventh Ray Wedding. We got to use the great field at sunset up the hill from the restaurant with gorgeous light coming through the trees.
With their outfits already revealed, come wedding day they opted to get ready together. The couple started off at the Hotel Wilshire, a gorgeous modern building filled with photo-friendly decor. We love when our clients choose pretty hotels to get ready, it makes the photos shine that much more!
After they got ready, Rachel and Timo headed over to Inn of the Seventh Ray, a lovely restaurant that hosts weddings on their outdoor patio in Topanga Canyon. As it gets darker the Inn transforms into a secluded destination complete with twinkling stars above and a brook that runs alongside the patio.
The ceremony was filled with personal touches, from a speech about stars (one of the wedding themes, which was also reflected on the necklace decorating Rachel’s bouquet), to Rachel and Timo planting a tree to symbolize their life together. They even had a butterfly release after their first kiss!
In addition to the ceremony, the reception decor was stunning – the floral arrangement were earthy and lush, filled with ferns, moss, and vibrant purple flowers. There was even a hummingbird nest on display. Every centerpiece was a bit different and I couldn’t stop looking at them. The night finished off with dinner al fresco, under glass chandeliers and twinkle lights. Simply Natural Events did a great job coordinating the event and it was a truly memorable wedding.
Thank you for letting us spend such a beautiful day with you Rachel and Timo!

Inn of the Seventh Ray Wedding
“Choosing my dress was one the easiest parts of the process! I saw Claire Pettibone’s designs and knew right away that I simply had to wear one of her dresses. There were many to choose from but Elwin was my favorite! Her dresses have a unique and timeless glamour unlike any others. I walked into her flagship location in LA, tried on the dress and chose it, just like that. I never went anywhere else. Timo had his suit custom made at Este’s in Portland. We loved working with the owner of the shop, Tony. He was really devoted to finding something that was unique yet elegant for Timo.”
“We were looking for something that had a natural environment with many trees. Also we wanted it to feel set apart from the city, that you had to take a journey to arrive at the destination. The Inn of the Seventh Ray had all of this and was even more beautiful than we could have imagined.”
“The floral centerpieces at my wedding absolutely took my breath away. They were perfect, stunning. Straight out of my dreams! They were organic yet cultivated and so incredibly unique. Timo and I had met with several potential florists but just didn’t really feel much of a creative spark until we met with Meg and Annie from The Little Branch. They came to meet us at the Inn of the Seventh Ray and I was so relieved that they really understood my vision for the florals. Not only that, they were excited about it! I told them we wanted something that felt like an enchanted forest floor, lichen covered twigs, something mossy, something lush, fragile flowers, slightly surreal, something that included bell jars and a hummingbird’s nest, something that celebrated the springtime, ferns. They did all this more and their inspiring work amplified the ethereal and whimsical qualities of the location and event. Meg and Annie were a delight to work with and I will be loving the photos of those arrangements for the rest of my life. The evening was such a whirlwind that I barely had to time to view the arrangements!
That’s one of the reasons I am so happy that Ian Grant shot the wedding! Choosing a photographer is one the most important decisions you can make when planning your wedding. Timo and I chose wisely with Ian. He was not only able to capture every important detail of the day, he and his team were so kind and joyful during the event that my guests from out of town actually thought they were good friends of ours who happened to be photographers! I’ve been to a lot of weddings and I’ve never seen a photographer be so in control of his photos without ever intruding on the flow of the wedding. His amazing attention to detail, excellent compositional skills, technical knowledge and clear talent for lighting will allow us to always remember and enjoy the tender moments and visual delights that made our wedding such a joyful experience. We could not be happier with our photos.”
“My favorite part of the day was the warmth and joy I felt from my friends and family members who were so happy for us from the engagement announcement all the way to the big day. I am fortunate that my winding life path has allowed me to make so many meaningful connections with such loving friends and our planning process allowed me to rely on them for support when the planning became stressful and to celebrate with them when we had time to relax and enjoy the anticipation of the event.”
“When Timo and I arrived for our dinner at The Inn of the Seventh Ray while we were trying to choose a location, we were immediately delighted by the sounds of croaking toads! We both love natural sounds. The environment that is created by singing creatures like this is just magical. We were so happy that they were croaking again on our wedding night! It added so much to the springtime ambiance.”
