One of my favorite things to do is ride my bike from playa del rey > marina del rey which is basically the town next door to me in los angeles. marina is a great little community and the stretch of bike path, [aka: the strand] around the marina is one of the best parts of it. it starts off in playa del rey, and goes along this massive long levee of sorts with the two lanes of bike path and water on either side of you. it winds around the fisherman's village and then through the actual marina [which is the world's biggest man-made marina]. if you ever visit la, biking on the strand is the thing to do- even if its only in venice or santa monica it can be a lot of fun and can be good excercise avoiding getting taken out by the pro cyclists that ride on it during the weekend. anyway here's some more info on the marina as well as some photos of boats, cats, and sunsets.
Marina del Rey is located just south and east of Venice and just north of Playa del Rey and the Ballona Creek. Venice actually extends north and south just west of Marina del Rey up to the north edge of the entrance channel. Just south of the entrance channel lies Playa del Rey. Marina del Rey is completely surrounded on all sides by the City of Los Angeles, just east of Marina Del Rey is the community of Del Rey in Los Angeles City. The Fisherman's Village offers a good view of Marina del Rey's dominant feature, the largest man-made small boat harbor in the world with about 7000 pleasure boats and yachts. The marina is surrounded by many high rise luxury Condos, hotels, apartments, shops, and restaurants
I met this man who kept cats on his boat and learned the hard way that he had to tie up his cats because one spotted a fish and jumped in after it and almost drowned! He wouldnt let me take his picture however because he works at a jail now and doesnt want to get shot.
Sunset at the Marina
Looking down on Dockweiler State Beach from Vista del Mar, thats my beach and I like it because no-one ever goes there. Or at least over by the runoff creek part...
UCLA boats train in Ballona Creek, you can see them practice in the early evening
When it gets dark, thats the ticket for the criminals to come out and do drugs and kill old ladies. Aka: my time to ride home really fast.
