ian - Hi Jenia,

Try not to go all the way to F/1.8 as your focus will be too shallow as you've found. Anywhere f/2-3.2 is a safe bet for a stationery subject. Have fun with your 50mm, stick with primes- they're great. :)

Jenia - Great shots! May I ask you what aperture / shutter speed settings you used in these? You have the whole face sharp and well lit, yet the blurred background. I mostly do street photography as well as shoot 2d artwork. Occasionally I do headshots for my friends and still struggle with correct settings! Usually my depth of field is either so shallow, that one eye will be in focus and the other one softish, or face in focus - background too sharp.
