The Matanuska Glacier was without a doubt the highlight of our Alaska trip for me. Since the glacier is basically sitting on the side of the road, it's very easy to get to and being on private land there's none of that 'you can only get so close' business. The people who own the land make you sign a waiver when you pay saying if you slip on a piece of ice it's your own fault and the bears are free to drag your carcass away [they will]. That being said, it doesn't quite have the squeaky clean roads and trails, but there's something fun about climbing on wobbly boards through serious muck out to an incredibly gorgeous glacier. Even though it's pretty far out of the way, I highly recommend heading out to the Matanuska Glacier.
