Quite literally after another year of Ian and Lily birthdays [we're a day a part], we found ourselves heading back to my hometown of Dartmouth, Massachusetts for a bit of a family emergency. Sadly, my mom passed quite suddenly and everyone found themselves back at the old family homestead. It's always a little surreal heading back home, but we got to take Lily hiking a little bit and show her around a few new places she hasn't been before. Also, I can now say I've purchased airfare 3 hours before leaving my house, a day before Thanksgiving.

I'm still exploring the Pacific Northwest, but I'm convinced if you've got family in town and want to show off a little bit, it's hard to beat the Big Four Ice Caves. This summer Lily was getting a little stir-crazy so I decided it was time to head back to go see the snow, which is still a pretty good novelty in the middle of July. My parents were in town as well, so I got to show off one of my favorite little places.
I guess it comes with the job being a photographer, but there are certain people I get so much pleasure seeing grow as a couple. Michelle and Nick are a pair that absolutely fit that bill, and seeing them go from a fun engaged couple, to married, to having two kids now- it's such a treat. We go all the way back to 2010 when I first shot their engagement in Venice and then their wedding at the Upper Las Virgenes Open Space Preserve. Last year they were also one of the last people we photographed before moving from Los Angeles to Seattle, so needless to say Tanya and I just adore this family. A year after adding Julian, they were ready for baby #2 which came via Rose, an adorable little girl with a fantastic personality! In May I was down in LA shooting a wedding and was able to fit in a little session with these fine folks, it's always a treat!
Tucked away in Langley, WA is a gorgeous little dirt road which weaves through a forest and leads down to a quaint little house, weathered barn, and expansive fields as far as the eye could see. Sounds like my little slice of heaven! Tanya and I had the pleasure of photographing the Masaniai family out at their Whidbey Island home this summer and it was easily one of my all time favorite family photography sessions.
