Rebecca and Max were double the fun when they brought their lovely pups up to the Griffith Park Observatory, one of our favorite places to shoot in LA.  If you can deal with the sometimes chaotic crowds it can be a blast to take photos at.  So many great little sports and shooting there every time is a totally different experience.  With that said, I've never shot with dogs in such a highly trafficked spot but they were true champs!  You can tell how much their pups mean to Rebecca and Max, they couldn't imagine not having them there...and the dogs have such great personalities!  They were ready to ham it up as soon as they arrived!

Coffee is an important aspect of Rebecca and Max's life.  They bonded on dates over coffee and its usually the first thing they do together every day so they wanted to somehow incorporate it into their shoot.

Every once in awhile I like to pull out the white seamless backdrop and get some photos of Lily goofing off on it.  Somehow she seems able to entertain herself for hours at end, you know until she has a massive meltdown which can only be comforted by Dad [sans camera].

Utah

It was a mildly frightening drive from Capitol Reef National Park over to Canyonlands in Moab, Utah.  Just hundreds of miles of empty valley floor with giant birds hanging around the side of the road just waiting for you to break down so they can eat you.  Tanya and I had visited a few years earlier, and as expected not a whole lot had changed- except the weather was pretty hazy and crummy this time around.  Even the cows were still in the middle of the road like last time, hilarious!  It was nice to be able to peek around again though, such a gorgeous area.

Utah

In continuing on past Mesa Verde National Park I headed across the Colorado border into southern Utah and then weaved my way up into the literal middle of nowhere.  Like no cars, gas stations, or people middle of nowhere.  While it was somewhat unnerving not seeing a whole lot of civilization, the rock formations were fantastic- especially out by Lake Mead.  The soil was lacking some water though I think.

Eventually, about 5 or so hours later I reached Capitol Reef National Park, a gorgeous little oasis of rock and desert in the middle of Utah.  I wasn't quite sure what I would make of the place at first, but I quickly fell in love with this carved up sandstone National Park.  Somewhat of a photographer paradise of color and contrast.  I can usually judge how much I like a park after the fact by how many photos were shot/gigs taken up on my hard drive.  On this trip Capitol Reef took the cake over any other park visited.  I had a great time out there and drove through some carved out canyons in my rental SUV and hung out with horses.  Excellent hikes and photos to be sure, just be ready for a serious road trip.  There is basically no easy way to get there other than fill up the tank and hope you're getting good gas milage.

Colorado

After escaping the snow in Black Canyon of the Gunnison, I was ready for some National Parks that I wasn't going to freeze to death at.  I headed south to check out Mesa Verde National Park, a few hour drive from there near the four corners area.  I can't say I was quite aware that in this few hour drive I was going to be crossing a huge mountain range, in a snow/hail storm, and with my car yelling at me to get an oil change.  I also got those 10k high up elevation out of breath shakes as I was running around taking photos in the snow.  There were lots of gorgeous aspen trees up there and perfect crystal clear skies- you almost forget they exist living in LA.

Once I got to Mesa Verde, it was another hour or so drive around the park to get to Cliff Palace.  There were thousands of dead trees by the road, which was somehow quite beautiful.  In order to get a close up experience with the ruins you have to go on a tour arraigned by the visitor center [and given by the park rangers].  I was able to get in on the last tour of the day at 5pm and hang out with a family from Riverside, CA sporting destruction derby shirts.  A few people wanted to talk camera with me, which was nice because at this point I probably hadn't talked to anyone in a couple days.  Anyway, the tour was actually great and in between another snowstorm the sun peaked out and cooked the ruins with gorgeous sunset light.  After the tour I got my last shots of the day and only saw a couple cars the whole time and got to really hang out and enjoy myself.  The next day it was off to Capitol Reef National Park!

Colorado

In continuing my epic National Parks project, next on the list was Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado.  I headed out on a cheap $220 flight from LA to Grand Junction, which is a small town somewhat near the eastern border with Utah.  I had a small detour in Salt Lake City where I had to switch flights, but thanks to a slight delay I had about 10 minutes to run completely across the SLC airport...then board one of those 3 seats across commuter jets.  No problem in clear weather, but in a nice little storm like we had it kept the plane doing those lovely nose drops.  The female college student sitting next to me stopped talking every 5 minutes to grab my knee as we did a stomach clenching drop.  But we arrived.  It was about an hour-and-a-half drive to Montrose further south and quite literally at 10pm everyone was at home asleep.  There was no-one one the roads.

Black Canyon was about a 20 minute drive from Montrose and I set out in the morning from my crusty little motel.  It started off in the 50's down in the valley and slowly got down into the 40's once I got to the entrance booth.  It was sunny too which was quickly changing.  40's went down to the 30's and then in came the snow.  Also, I should say I probably only saw about 10 other people in the park the entire day, which was probably for a reason.  Nevertheless, it was kind of fun getting some weather for once, though by the end of the trip I was pretty sick of the snow.

How to I say this nicely?  Since Lily has been on solid foods, she's been a little bit *plugged up* as of late, so being the nice parents we are, we went out and bought her some baby food prunes from the store.  Outside of rice cereal and milk/formula she's never had anything with a distinct taste before, so we wanted to make sure this whole thing was documented well...being photographers and all.  Turns out Lily LOVES a nice prune and rice cereal cocktail as the following photos attest.

I'm pretty sure Lily didn't realize there was more food on her face when she set about licking the spoon clean...by that I mean she grabbed it away from Tanya and made sure that thing was spotless.

...and then promptly went for the food bowl next.

There was no simple way to clean this kid up afterwards, so we let our food frenzied dog Riley go at it.  Lily was excited at first, and then realized the true horror that was going on.

Phew!

After logging around 950 miles doing a pretty massive run around Colorado and Utah I'm finally back, and phew- I'm good not driving for awhile!  I made it to all the National Parks I had hoped to [Black Canyon, Mesa Verde, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands & Arches] and came back with around 53 gigs worth of photos to sort and edit.  Sounds like fun to me!  It was pretty drastically different then expected with a few little/big snowstorms, 30-50 degree weather, sunburns, elevation sickness, and I'm thankful to have brought some layers and gloves.  Those 10,000 feet mountain passes had me winded and snapping quicker than usual.  The 5d Mark III held up wonderfully and the new auto-focus is to die for.

I should be posting up some photos from each park in the next couple weeks.  In the mean time you can see some phone snaps I uploaded to Facebook while on route.

Tara and Steve are an absolutely adorable couple and we got to know them better in their hometown of Redondo Beach, California.  Redondo is a nice hip town and we got to tour some of their favorite spots at sunset.  As I'm sure is obvious from the photos, their love for each other is quite evident.  They have wonderfully compatible personalities and are some of the most gracious people you'll meet.  Hope you enjoy the photos, they're a ton of fun!

In a little less then a week I get to go do what I love and run around some National Parks for a bit!  I got a pretty cheap flight into Grand Junction, Colorado and am going to be cruising around and visiting a bunch of parks I haven't been to before.  See which parks I've been to in the past in my National Parks Guide.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison

- Never visited before [Number 23 on my list]

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a United States National Park located in western Colorado.  The Gunnison River drops an average of 34 feet per mile (5 m/km) through the entire canyon, making the 5th steepest mountain descents in North America. In comparison, theColorado River through the Grand Canyon drops an average of 7.5 feet per mile (1.4 m/km). The greatest descent of the Gunnison River occurs in the park at Chasm View dropping 240 feet per mile (45 m/km). The Black Canyon is so named on account of its steepness which makes it difficult for sunlight to penetrate very far down the canyon. As a result, the canyon walls are most often in shadow, causing the rocky walls to appear black. At its narrowest point the canyon is only 40 feet (12 m) across at the river.  The extreme steepness and depth of the Black Canyon formed as the result of several geologic processes acting together. The Gunnison River is primarily responsible for carving the canyon, though several other geologic events had to occur in order to form the canyon as it is seen today.

You might remember Jeanine and Rob from their super gorgeous Adamson House Wedding a few months back [yes, that was the infamous Bieber wedding].  Well a few weeks before that we got to go hang out at one of my favorite engagement photo spots, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA.  If you're looking for a great modern look with amazing lighting you're not going to find a better spot.

Lily had her 4 month checkup [with shots & hello kitty bandaids!] and after we got the doctor's ok it was officially time for her to get a taste beyond milk and formula.  Tanya picked up some rice cereal at the store and thus began her exciting adventure in palate expansion!

I tried explaining to Riley that having Lily might keep him up at night some times, but he was the one who stood to benefit the most from having her.  Why?  Food cleanup of course!  Riley's life revolves around food, so if there is some involved he's interested- so he stood watch over the activities.  You know, to make sure everyone was professional and the food smelled ready for human consumption.

Lily has been super aware of everything around her in the last few weeks, she wants to know what we're doing [or at least have an eye-line on whats up] and when we're boring she yells/punches at us. Today she screamed at me because I took her away from looking at the hundreds of photo booth pictures on our fridge.  She's also obsessed with television which is probably not a good thing, as much as we try and keep her away she contorts her body to watch.  It's kind of funny.

"that...was...amazing!"

Lily's personality has been really coming out lately and after becoming impatient with our lackluster feeding skills she quickly grabbed the spoon and figured out how it worked on her own.  Too funny!  All was good until she started throwing it and then attempted eating the rest of the meal off her bib.

Getting Ready: The Hotel Wilshire Los Angeles, CA
Ceremony/Reception: Inn of the Seventh Ray Topanga, CA

As photographers, Ian and I love it when couples take traditional wedding details, turn them on their heads, and make them their own.  That’s just what Timo and Rachel did for their March wedding, and it was so much fun to photograph.

In a twist on tradition, Rachel and Timo actually got dressed up in their wedding gear a few weeks before the wedding so they would have time for a nice, extended portrait session for their  Inn of the Seventh Ray Wedding.  We got to use the great field at sunset up the hill from the restaurant with gorgeous light coming through the trees.

With their outfits already revealed, come wedding day they opted to get ready together.  The couple started off at the Hotel Wilshire, a gorgeous modern building filled with photo-friendly decor.  We love when our clients choose pretty hotels to get ready, it makes the photos shine that much more!

After they got ready, Rachel and Timo headed over to Inn of the Seventh Ray, a lovely restaurant that hosts weddings on their outdoor patio in Topanga Canyon.  As it gets darker the Inn transforms into a secluded destination complete with twinkling stars above and a brook that runs alongside the patio.

The ceremony was filled with personal touches, from a speech about stars (one of the wedding themes, which was also reflected on the necklace decorating Rachel’s bouquet), to Rachel and Timo planting a tree to symbolize their life together.  They even had a butterfly release after their first kiss!

In addition to the ceremony, the reception decor was stunning – the floral arrangement were earthy and lush, filled with ferns, moss, and vibrant purple flowers.  There was even a hummingbird nest on display.  Every centerpiece was a bit different and I couldn’t stop looking at them.  The night finished off with dinner al fresco, under glass chandeliers and twinkle lights. Simply Natural Events did a great job coordinating the event and it was a truly memorable wedding.

The other day had a gorgeous sunset so we figured what better way to spend the evening then down the road at the beach in Playa del Rey [right next to Marina del Rey in Los Angeles].  It was a little windy but Lily seemed very interested in the sand and thankfully didn't scream too loud when introduced rather abruptly to the ocean waves.  It also let me get out and do some playing with my new Canon 5D Mark III which was my photo present to myself [I get to do these things every few years when new ones come out].  Once the sun started going down Lily had enough and was done with this whole photo thing.  I'm pretty interested in seeing how she feels about growing up with a photographer dad, recently with the Everyday project she started giving this 'seriously this again?' look with her eyebrows whenever it's that time of day.  I think we'll be able to look back on these photos and smile later, so I'm trying to pull out the camera as much as possible!

I should say Lily is currently obsessed with chewing on people's fingers, she doesn't care who's fingers they are as long as they're in her mouth.  If you're not paying attention she'll grab them and before you know it she'll shove them in her mouth.  Nothing else comes close and she makes these crazy happy grunting sounds when she's munching on them [even at the beach].

A little about Point Lobos

Point Lobos is the common name for the area including Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and two adjoining marine protected areas: Point Lobos State Marine Reserve (SMR) and Point Lobos State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA). Point Lobos is just south of the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States on the coast of the Pacific Oceanbut north of Big Sur.

Point Lobos contains a number of hiking trails, many next to the ocean, and a smaller number of beaches. It is the site of a historic marine reserve, which was expanded in 2007. It is also the home to a museum on whaling, which includes a historic building once used by area fishermen. The longstanding wildlife protection and scenic seascape have led to Point Lobos' reputation as an unparalleled local recreational scuba diving destination.

The iconic Point Lobos area is geologically unique and contains a rich and diverse plant and animal life both on shore and in the water. Called the "greatest meeting of land and water in the world" by landscape artist Francis McComas, Point Lobos is considered a crown jewel in the California state park system. The geological history of Point Lobos describes the rocks that create the headlands and inlets that make Point Lobos famous.  Carmel submarine canyon lies just north of Point Lobos. Like Monterey Canyon to the north the canyon provides cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface during upwelling events. These nutrient rich waters fuel the high primary productivity seen in Carmel and Monterey Bays, which in turn fuel the high diversity of life observed in the waters and on land at Point Lobos.

Salvation Mountain is located by the Salton Sea, another one of my favorite places.  There's tons of junk, abandoned houses, interesting and crazy people, and migratory birds.  If you ever want a really awesome inspiring day tour, go check this place out before it gets too hot out there.  Slab City is also right nearby which is a crazy place in its own right.  Recently L'Official magazine in France used some of these photos in their Dec/Jan 2012 issue.

Ohio

Whenever I get a chance to escape a little I try and work on cutting down the list of US National Parks I haven't visited yet.  So far I've visited around 22, which isn't too crazy- once I get going on the Alaska ones where you have to fly and contend with bears it's going to be a little rough!

A little while ago I was out in Columbus, OH shooting a wedding and thought 'when am I going to be in Ohio again?' so I made the few hour trek down to Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  While not typical 'majestic' like say Canyonlands or Zion, it was kind of nice to be out in the woods and shooting landscapes again.

Ever since November 20th, 2011 the day Lily was born, we've been doing what every camera obsessed parent would do- running an everyday photo project.  It's been a kind of fun little daily jaunt thanks to a great iPhone app called [appropriately] Everyday.  If you've got a little one on the way, I highly suggest you pick it up as it's been a blast to go back the few months of her life and see how she's grown exponentially and all the fun little expressions.  When you finally get tired enough of taking all those photos you can put them all together into a quicktime timelapse and impress the grandparents.  We'll see how long Lily lasts, lately she's been giving me lots of dirty looks when it's photo time....
